PTOLEMUS Consulting Group released the 5th edition of its Usage-Based Insurance Global Study by offering a free, 100-page abstract. Available to download today, the document reveals the key findings of the 1,350-page telematics insurance market analysis.

In 2015, PTOLEMUS predicted that telematics would uberize the auto insurance market.

With over 450 active programmes and 60 million customers, the Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) market has been multiplied by 6 since then. It is now a truly global phenomenon that reaches 59 countries and generates more than €50 billion in premiums.

UBI is now actually growing faster than Uber itself: in the last 2 years, the number of UBI policyholders grew by almost 17% per year vs 14% for Uber’s active users.

This is a reflection of the growing smartphonisation of the business: insurers increasingly use mobile apps for UBI, making it a key function of their corporate app.

Frederic Bruneteau, Managing Director, said: “Whenever insurers propose attractive UBI programmes, customers prefer these to traditional flat-rate, proxy-based offers. As the cost of telematics has become negligible and the benefits more tangible, we expect more and more insurers to make it the central part of their digitalisation strategy.”

PTOLEMUS predicts that by 2035, the number of UBI customers will triple, generating more than €200 billion in premiums for insurers.

Leveraging 65 interviews and the experience from 100 consulting projects, the report includes:

  • 41 case studies including Admiral, Allstate, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Discovery Insure, Lemonade, Libra Seguros, CarPlay, BYD, Carrot, Credit Karma, Erie, GM, Ford, Ping An, Porto Seguro, Progressive, Root, Tesla, Tokio Marine, Toyota, Waymo…
